Teaching children as earlier as toddler years will help to prevent damage to teeth and gums later in life. Baby teeth are as important to take care of as permanent teeth. Before your children's teeth come in, do not use toothpaste to clean their gums; simply use water as a rinse. When teeth begin to come in use a very soft bristled brush and water.
When toddlers begin to mimic and want to brush their own teeth they should use toothpaste made for toddlers. This type of toothpaste does not contain excessive amounts of fluoride and is safe to swallow. There are battery operated toothbrushes made for toddlers with very soft bristles or you could let them use a manual one.
It is recommended that we brush our teeth for two minutes. Getting your child to brush their teeth for two minutes will be tough at times unless they are entertained. There are many children's toothbrushes that will play music for two full minutes. This will teach the child to not stop brushing until the music stops.
If you prefer your child to use a manual toothbrush, use an egg timer that can be set for two minutes. The child will anticipate the timer going off while continuing to brush their teeth. It is important to get children in the habit of brushing their teeth in the morning and before bedtime. Often time's children will go along with completing hygiene chores if it is a game of some sort.
Children love games so make it a game to complete their hygiene chores. Create a song with the child that sings them through each process of brushing teeth, bathing and putting on their PJ's. Often times the child will be more than willing to brush their teeth if an adult is also brushing theirs at the same time.
Part of the oral hygiene process includes brushing the tongue and gums, but children may find this difficult. Teach the child by demonstrating the correct way. The teeth need to be flossed as well. Try using one of the children's flavored flosses to start them off with regular flossing.
Brushing teeth as early as possible is the most important part of cavity prevention. The earlier a child learns to take care of their teeth the stronger and healthier their teeth will be. Poor oral hygiene can be painful as well as expensive when trips to the dentist are frequently required. Remember the child will want to do whatever they see an adult do so if you use electric toothbrushes, getting the child a battery operated one will more than likely persuade them to brush their teeth.
